Where to Buy Pet Supplies in San Juan del Sur
You can keep a dog fed and geared up in San Juan del Sur. What you can’t always do is walk into a store and find the exact US or European brand your dog lived on last year. Selection rotates. When something good lands, people buy it.
Here’s how we break it down: what we keep at Royal Paws, what you’ll find in town supers, when a Rivas run makes sense, and what to bring in your suitcase.
1. Royal Paws pet shop (downtown)
Our shop sits with the studio and café near Mercado Municipal. We stock the everyday stuff dog people run out of: see current pet shop offerings.
- Dog food when we have bags in stock (message ahead for brands).
- Collars, leashes, simple harnesses, bowls.
- Toys and chews that survive beach life better than cheap plastic.
- Shampoo, brushes, and grooming extras we actually use in the studio.
- Small travel bits: waste bags, wipes, basic cleanup.
WhatsApp us if you need something specific before you walk over. Inventory moves, and we’d rather tell you yes or no than have you climb the hill for nothing.
2. Mini supers and town shops
Most mini supers carry at least one or two kibble lines, sometimes wet food, and random bags of treats. You’ll also see flea/tick products, though brands rotate. Quality and freshness vary. Check bag dates.
- Fine for emergency bags and basic collars.
- Not reliable for prescription diets or niche grain-free lines.
- Compare prices. Tourist-facing shelves sometimes cost more for the same bag.
3. Bigger runs (Rivas and beyond)
When you need a larger bag, a second harness size, or a brand that never sticks in SJDS, a trip toward Rivas (or asking a friend who’s already driving) is how locals restock. Some people also order specialty items to Managua and bring them down.
4. What to pack or ship
- At least two to four weeks of your dog’s normal food if they’re picky.
- Any prescription meds, joint supplements, or eye/ear drops you can’t easily replace.
- A harness that already fits. Sizing here is inconsistent.
- A familiar bed or blanket for the first week in a new house.
- Nail clippers and a slicker if you maintain coats at home.
Grooming supplies vs. booking a groom
We sell brushes and shampoo for home maintenance. When the coat is past that (mats, full curly-coat reset, nails you can’t see), book a grooming appointment with Reina. Services are listed on our grooming page.
