Traveling to Nicaragua With Your Dog
Flying into Nicaragua with a dog is very doable. The friction is timing: vaccines, a health certificate issued close to departure, airline rules, and then the handoff at Managua before you even start the drive south to San Juan del Sur.
We’re in SJDS and help a lot with pet travel paperwork for dogs leaving Nicaragua (we prepare documents and coordinate vet certification). For arrivals, we advise on what to double-check before you book the crate. Rules change. Confirm for your specific trip.
Entering Nicaragua with a dog (typical checklist)
Personal pets usually don’t need a separate import permit ahead of time, but you do deal with quarantine/inspection paperwork at the port of entry. Most people fly into Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (Managua).
- International health certificate from a licensed vet, usually within about 14 days of travel. Bring the original and a photocopy.
- Rabies vaccination for dogs over four months: typically more than 30 days and less than 12 months before entry. Bring the rabies certificate with the health papers.
- Parasite treatments (internal and external) within the window your origin country / Nicaragua expects, often within 30 days. Ask your vet to document them.
- On arrival, MAG / quarantine staff review papers, may charge an inspection fee, and issue the local quarantine permit. Airline staff can usually point you to the right desk.
- If you’re leaving the US, use a USDA-accredited vet and follow current APHIS endorsement steps for Nicaragua. Other countries have their own endorsement process.
Microchips are smart even when not strictly required. Clear ID on the crate and collar helps if anything goes sideways in transit.
Airline and crate realities
Call the airline before you buy tickets. Cabin vs. cargo vs. checked baggage depends on route, breed, weight, and season. Embargoes happen in hot months on some airlines. Connections with a dog are harder than nonstop.
- Book the pet slot when you book the seat. Don’t assume there’s room later.
- Crate must fit airline size rules and let the dog stand and turn.
- Practice crate time at home before travel day.
- Sedation is usually discouraged by airlines and vets for flying. Ask your vet before you invent a plan.
Managua to San Juan del Sur with a dog
The drive south is roughly three to four hours depending on traffic and stops. After a flight, that’s a long sit. Private transfer or a taxi that explicitly agrees to a dog beats gambling on the first shared shuttle.
- Water, a collapsible bowl, and a towel for a sweaty dog.
- A break mid-route if your dog needs to pee or decompress.
- Arrive with a leash ready. Don’t open the car door into traffic.
Leaving Nicaragua with a dog
Export paperwork depends on destination country and airline. We prepare the document package from San Juan del Sur and arrange veterinary certification close to departure (often the week before). Start as soon as dates are set. Full details and what to send us are on the pet travel paperwork page.
